SU demands Colombo to abandon peace process

Extreme Sinhala nationalist party, Sihala Urumaya (SU), Sunday appealed to the United National Front (UNF) Government to terminate the peace talks with Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) on the basis of the contents of the proposals for interim self-governing authority (ISGA), which the SU said will lead to the formation of a separate state, media sources said.

Mr.Tilak Karunaratne, President of the Sihala Urumaya further said the UNF government should abandon the current peace process as the proposed ISGA submitted by the LTTE has laid the foundation for the establishment of a separate state, media sources said.

He wanted the government to reveal its stand on the LTTE proposed ISGA for the NorthEast province.

Meanwhile talks between delegations of the main opposition Peoples Alliance (PA)led by its leader Ms Chandrika Kumaratunge and of the Sinhala nationalist cum Marxist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) led by its Secretary General Mr.Tilvin Silva began at the Presidential Secretariat Sunday evening, media sources in Colombo said.

Discussion will be centred only on the current political situation following the submission of the LTTE proposals on interim administration for the NorthEast province, said JVP parliamentarian Mr.Anura Dissanayake before going to Presidential Secretariat, media sources said. He added that other subjects such forming of election alliances or facing a snap general election will not be taken up in today's discussions.

However, PA sources said the talks with the JVP would mainly focus attention on defeating the UNF government during the budget debate.
