Sangaree readies to contest in Jaffna
[TamilNet, Saturday, 21 February 2004, 06:06 GMT]
Tamil United Liberation Front President Mr. Veerasingham Anandasangaree said Saturday he will contest the April elections to Sri Lanka's Parliament in Jaffna. Sources close to him confirmed that he would contest as an independent only in the electoral district of Jaffna. Mr. Anandasangaree cannot contest under the TULF banner as he is involved in a bitter legal wrangle with the party hierarchy. He cannot file nominations on behalf of his party without the approval of secretary general Mr. R. Sampanthan.
Arrangements for filing nominations were underway at the party's headquarters at Stanley Road in Jaffna town. Sri Lanka army troops and Police provided tight security to the TULF office Saturday. Former Mayor of Jaffna, Mr. Sellan Kandaiyan and Mr. P. Muthulingam were also present at the TULF office Saturday discussing nominations with Mr. Sangaree. Both are expected to be on the list of candidates with the TULF President.
