Senior EPDP leader shot dead in Colombo

Mr. Bala Nadarajah Iyer (Sinna Bala), a senior member of the EPDP, a close ally of Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga, was shot dead in Colombo by unidentified gunmen Monday around 8.15 a.m. Mr. Iyer was the spokesman for the EPDP and was on the editorial board of its paper Thinamurasu.

He was formerly a ranking member of the Eelam Revolutionary Organisation of Students (EROS), a Marxist Tamil sepratist group.

Mr. Iyer worked for the Liberation Tigers for five years after EROS became largely defunct in 1990.

He was leaving his home in Pamankada in Colombo 6, when two gunmen shot him dead, Police said.

EPDP accused the LTTE for the killing.
