Kumarapuram massacre case inquiry fixed

Mr.Anton Balasingham, Trincomalee High Court Judge fixed the inquiry into the Kumarapuram massacre case for 14 February 2005, as none of the witnesses was present when it was taken up on Monday. He also directed the court registrar to serve notice on three eyewitnesses to be present on the next date, legal sources said.

In this case the Attorney General has indicted seven accused, all are members of the government security forces on several charges including the murder of 25 Tamil villagers including men, women and children and causing grievous hurt to another 24 Tamil villagers on February11, 1996. However, one of the accused died after being indicted. All the accused are now enlarged on bail, the sources said.

According to the prosecution, a group of soldiers and policemen ran berserk on the day of incident firing indiscriminately at every civilian in Kumarapuram, which is one of the remote villages in Muttur division, south of Trincomalee district, the sources said.

Meanwhile the prosecution has been waiting for the report of the Government Analyst on the weapons recovered and forwarded to him, the sources said.

State Counsel Mr.S.M.Haleemdeen appeared for the prosecution.
