Colombo High Court which began hearing on the Ingurugama estate case on Monday extended the stay order preventing State's attempt to expropriate land belonging to estate workers at the Ingurugama tea estate in Badulla district and postponed the hearing to 26 September, legal sources said.
Justice Eric Basanayake and Justice K Sribavan issued the Court order. Ten estate workers, V Rani, K Thangarajah, V Kalaichelvi, K Vijayalaxmi, V Pumaalai, M Kumaraswamy, V Katpuranam, N Mariathas, S Nadesan and S Parvathy who filed the case appeared at the hearing. Of the six defendents, only an officer from Attorney General's (AG) office attended on behalf of the AG. The legal action was initiated when the State served notice to families of several estate workers to relocate to provide space for building University campus for Uva province.
