Jaffna journalists hold demonstration against attack on Tamil media

Large number of journalists based in Jaffna district Thursday morning held a one-hour demonstration in the Jaffna central bus stand condemning the assault on journalists of Sudar Oli, Colombo Tamil daily and its offices at Wellawatte and Grandpass. The shouted slogans, carrying placards protesting against the government for not taking prompt action to safeguard the Tamil media in Colombo, sources said.
Protestors alleged that the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna had been behind the attack on Sudar Oli offices and journalists, sources said. Journalists of Uthayan, Yarl Thinakural, Namathu Eelanadu, Valampuri and Eelanaatham published from Jaffna and Killinochchi and journalists reporting to Colombo Tamil dailies participated in the demonstration, sources said. They demanded the immediate release of Mr.S.Ramesh, Virakesari correspondent for Kurunagala who has been in custody of the Police. They also demanded the government to expedite judicial inquiry into the murder of journalists Mr.Mylvaganam Nimalarajan, Mr.I.Nadesan and Mr.D. Sivaram.
