LTTE exhorts NEPC to help impoverished Muttur East

Colonel Sornam, Trincomalee district military commander of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), and Mr.S.Elilan, Trincomalee district LTTE Head of the Political Wing, Thursday urged North East Provincial Council (NEPC) administration officials to channel funds to build proper roads, bridges, hospitals, schools and other essential services to the people of the neglected Muttur east region.

The LTTE leaders addressed a group of NEPC and foreign funded project officials Thursday at the Sampoor LTTE political secretariat, sources said.

Colonel Sornam said: "It is a crime if we fail to help the war and tsunami affected families during this climate of peace. Trincomalee district, in particular the villages in the Muttur east, have been badly neglected for more than two decades. Sri Lanka Government troops have imposed restriction on the transportation of essential materials needed for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of tsunami destroyed areas.

"We want the NEPC authority to double its efforts to solve the hardship faced by our people," Colonel Sornam appealed.

Mr.Elilan said people in Muttur east are finding very difficult to transport essential materials and food items to their areas from army-controlled territory through Kaddaiparichchan army checkpoint. Government departments are ignoring Muttur east villages in implementing reconstruction and rehabilitation projects. Non-governmental organizations are showing some interest in assisting the people in these villages, Elilan said.

Mr.Elilan requested the NEPC administration to voice concern over the ban and restriction imposed by the Sri Lanka armed forces. NEPC administration should take proper steps using its powers to alleviate the suffering of the Muttur east people, Mr.Elilan stressed.
