Claymore blast kills policeman in Vavuniya

A policeman was killed when unidentified persons set off a claymore mine targetting a police patrol about 150 metres from Special Task Force (STF) camp at Park road in Vavuniya, at 8:35 a.m., Wednesday, police in the northern town said.

STF elite troops rushed to the blast site and searched the area.

The police man was killed on the spot and his body was handed over to the Vavuniya hospital by the STF troopers, the sources said.

Vavuniya District Judge Mr.M.Ilancheliyan inspected the blast site.

Separetley, a man was shot dead by unidentified persons in front of Kalaimakal school at Nelukkulam - Cheddikkulam road, around 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, police said. His body was lying at the spot till Wednesday morning.

The victim is yet to be identified, the police said.
