Kumarapuram case goes to high court

The Muttur Magistrate R.M.Jayawardene on Wednesday (04.11.98) committed the Kumarapuram murder case for high court trail. In this case eight soldiers of Sri Lankan army have been charged with the murder of 24 Tamil civilians and attempted murder of 26 Tamil civilians on 11.02.1996 at Kumarapuram of remote village in Muttur division about 20 miles, south of Trincomalee town.
All together 120 charges including murder, attempted murder and unlawful assembly have been made against the accused. 76 civil witnesses were listed for giving evidences for the prosecution. But the evidence of 54 whiteness were recorded. After recording the evidence of these police personal, the Muttur Magistrate committed the case for high court trail. Attorney at law K.S.Ratnavel with police W.M.Wigesinghe of Muttur police led the evidence. According to the prosecution on the day of incident the army personnel camped in that hamlet had gone on rampage killing Tamil civilians who were living there.
