Hassan Ali to take oaths as UNP national list MP

Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) general secretary Hassan Ali, a member of the Eastern Provincial Council, is to be appointed national list parliamentarian of the main opposition United National Party (UNP) next week and is expected to take oaths in the Sri Lankan parliament on July 22, party sources said.

Hassan Ali along with his leader Rauf Hakim and Basheer Segu Dawood resigned from their parliamentary posts to contest the Eastern Provincial Council (EPC) election on May 10. All the three, Rauf Hakim from the Trincomalee district, Basheer Segu Dawood from the Batticaloa district and Hassan Ali from Ampaa'rai district, had won.

Basheer Segu Dawood is to be the leader of the opposition in the EPC.

Rauf Hakim attended the first meeting of the EPC in June 10 and later resigned. He was sworn in as UNP national list parliamentarian in the first week of July. Hassan Ali attended the EPC meeting for the first time on July 8. He is expected to tender his resignation letter from the councilor post to the Assembly Secretary by next week.

The next session of the EPC is to be held on July 22.

With the resignations of Rauf Hakim and Hassan Ali, two new councilors are to take oaths at the next EPC meeting, one from Trincomalee district and the other from Ampaa'rai district, EPC sources said.
