TNA MP Kanagaretnam ordered further detention in Colombo court

The Colombo Chief Magistrate and Additional District Judge
Mr. Nishantha Kappurarachchi Monday instructed the Criminal
Investigation Department of the Sri Lanka Police to further detain the
suspect Mr.Sathasivam Kanagaretnam, Vanni district Tamil National
Alliance (TNA) parliamentarian, conduct investigations and submit a comprehensive report to court on the next date, July 26.
The CID Monday produced Mr.Sathasivam Kanagaretnam in court and
informed the Chief Magistrate that he was alleged to have violated
the Emergency Regulation and assisted the LTTE. The CID further submitted to court that according to its investigations the TNA parliamentarian was suspected of having links with the LTTE and committed several offences. He was being detained on the order of the Defence Secretary Gothabaya Rajapakse since May 21. CID further said the MP was a resident of Mu’l’liyavalai in Mullaiththeevu district. Mr.Kanagaretnam was taken into custody while he was staying with his people in one of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) internment camps in Vavuniyaa, for displaced civilians from Mullaiththeevu. He was earlier trapped for several months in Mullaitheivu due to military operation.
