Only ninety-three elders were allowed to leave the ‘internment camps’ in Vavuniyaa Wednesday despite earlier announcement that five hundred elders would be allowed to leave. Of the ninety-three, forty-six elders were handed over to the All Ceylon Hindu Congress (ACHC) and the rest to the elders’ home run by the Vavuniyaa-Koayil Ku’lam Sivan Koayil.
Earlier the resettlement authority said they would hand over 300
elders to the ACHC and 200 to the Elders’ Home of the Vavuniyaa-Koayil Ku’lam Sivan Koayil in the second stage on Wednesday. However, the resettlement authority Wednesday allowed only ninety-three elders, keeping the fate of others identified for the release on Wednesday in suspense, civil sources said. The ACHC that took the responsibility of maintaining 46 elders
transported them to Thirukkeatheesvaram Sivan Temple where they are now given shelter in Ammaiyappan Home run by the temple trustee, according to Mr.Sinnathurai Dhanapala, Chairman of the Social Welfare Committee of the ACHC. 47 elders are now sheltered in Vavuniyaa-Koayil Ku’lam Sivan Koayil elders’ home, sources said.
