Chandrasekaran funeral to take place Monday

The funeral of the leader of the Upcountry People's Front and the Minister of Community Development and Social Inequity Eradication, Periyasamy Chandrasekaran, who passed away after a brief illness Friday morning in Colombo, will take place Monday evening with full State honors in Talawakelle Urban Council grounds in the Nuwara Eliya district, party sources in Nuwara Eliya said.

The remains of the late Minister Chandrasekaran were placed at the Parliament premises till 12.30 p.m. Saturday.

A large gathering of politicians from all political parties paid their last respects to the late minister.

Chandrasekaran had been a Parliamentarian since 1994.

Periyasamy Chandrasekaran was born on 16th April 1957 in Talawakelle. He had had his education in Highlands College in Hatton.

Chandrasekaran formed the Up Country People’s Front (UPF) in 1994 and contested the general election and entered Parliament the same year. He became the Minister of Infrastructure Development in 2001.

He contested the 2004 election once again and obtained 42,582 votes. He was arrested by the UNP government in 1993 under the Prevention of Terrorism Act and detained for a brief period. He entered politics in 1982 and was elected to the Lindula Urban Council, the same year.
