Buddhist priest lights lamp at LTTE function

Mr. Poovannan, the head of the LTTE's Civil Administration Division, raised the Tiger flag and Rev. Siyambalagaswewa Thero, the chief monk of the Vavuniya's Buddhist temple, lit the ceremonial lamp at the opening of the political office of the Liberation Tigers in the northern border town Wednesday morning. Everyone who was gathered at the function observed two minutes of silence for the LTTE's war dead when the function commenced at 10.30 a.m.

The Government Agent for Vavuniya, Mr. K. Ganesh and the President of the Vavuniya Traders' Association, Mr. P. S Abdullah spoke at the opening ceremony. Mr. Harsha Navaratna, the President of the Seva Lanka Foundation and a close confidante of UNF minister Mr.S. B Disanayaka, cut the ribbon to open the LTTE's office which is located on Station Road in Vavuniya town. Mr. Sivasakthi Anandan, MP for the Vanni (EPRLF) also lighted the ceremonial lamp. Ms. Imelda Sukumar, the Divisional Secretary for Vavuniya opened the name board of the LTTE office. Mr. Melavan, the officer in charge of the LTTE's political wing in Vavuniya made the inaugural speech. Dr. S Nandakumar, the head of the Jaffna University's (Vavuniya campus) Department of Management Studies, Mr. Sivanathan Kishore, the President of the Vavuniya branch of the Sri Lanka and a member of the Ceasefire Monitoring Committee for the district also spoke at the function. Mr. Poovanan made the concluding observations.
