Police to search EPDP offices

The Jaffna Magistrate Tuesday allowed an application by the Police to search two offices in Jaffna of the paramilitary Eelam People's Democratic Party (EPDP), in connection with the murder two years ago of journalist Mylvaganam Nimalarajan.

The judge allowed the application following a statement made by a member of the EPDP, David Michael Collin alias 'Murali', who - along with two others - is now in remand in connection with the murder. Murali was arrested in Trincomalee town a few weeks ago.

Mr. Nimalarajan was shot dead by unidentified gunmen on 19 October 2001 in his house, located in the high security zone of the Sri Lanka Army.

When the long running murder case was taken up for further hearing Tuesday Inspector Ranjit de Silva, Officer in charge of the Special Investigation Unit moved that court should allow the police to search the Jaffna and Kayts offices of the EPDP to conduct further investigation.

According to Murali's statement, some of the EPDP members involved in the murder are hiding in the Jaffna and Kayts offices-cum-camps of the EPDP.

The Magistrate R.T.Viknaraja further ordered the Police to submit a detailed report on August 20 about the search of two EPDP offices.
