Trinco St. Joseph's celebrates 136th annual college day

The St. Josephs' College in Trincomalee, one of the leading educational
institutions in the eastern port town, Wednesday celebrated its 136th annual
college day with religious observances and sports activities among teachers
and students, sources said.
In the morning, the Parish Priest of Child Jesus Church in Orr's Hill in
Trincomalee, Rev. Annathas, held the Mass in the college auditorium, which
was attended by old students, retired principals, teachers and well-
wishers of the college. The St Joseph's College has won several
national level championships in the field of sports in recent years,
sources said.

The college was founded in 1867 by Jesuit priests at the St Mary's Cathedral
in Trincomalee. At the initial stage, it was named St.Joseph's Tamil
School. It was one of the leading education institutions at that time,
sources said.
It was registered as St.Joseph's English School on 28th August 1919. The
school was shifted to the present site in 1955. Since then it has been
renamed
St Joseph's College. The school was handed over to the government in
1971.The central government conferred national school status on this school
in 1994, sources said.
In addition to this school, the St Mary's English School, the St. Mary's
Vernacular
School, the St. Francis Xavier School, the St Joseph's Tamil School, Roman
catholic schools like the Eachilampathu V.M.School, the Alankerni
V.M.School and the Thennamaravadi V.M.School were all functioning
independently under one Jesuit network, sources said.day.
