Educational Development Forum for the Vadamaradchi Zone (EDFVZ) in the Jaffna district has been inaugurated to raise the standard of education in the zone and to put into maximum use the available teaching resources and to provide proper training to teachers, education sources said.

Nineteen schools are functioning in the Vadamaradchi zone with about 27 thousand students and about 1050 teachers. Four schools are still under closure following military operations in the past. The question of reopening the four schools came in for discussion at the inaugural meeting of the EDFVZ held on Tuesday at the Vadamaradchi zonal office.

At the meeting, the urgent need to fill teacher vacancies that now exist for the subjects of English and aesthetic studies, and also in primary classes, was discussed, sources said.

The deputy head of the Thamileelam Educational Development Board, Mr.Arun Master, delivered the keynote address. He outlined the objectives of the EDFVZ, sources said

Vadamaradchi zonal Director of Education Mr.V.T.Selvaretnam was elected president of the EDFVZ. The Udupiddy American Mission College's Deputy Principal, Mr.K. Tharmalingam, was elected the secretary and Mr.K. Chandrasekaram, accountant of the Vadamarachchi education zonal office as the treasurer.

A six-member committee was also elected, sources said.
