Church intervenes over student malnutrition[TamilNet, Wednesday, 04 March 1998, 23:59 GMT]The Human Development Centre (HUDC), the relief and rehabilitation arm of the Catholic Church in Jaffna, is providing nutritious vegetable soup to students in all schools in the Wanni, said sources in Vavuniya. The programme was begun due to widespread malnutrition among school children in the 20 schools of the area. The soup will be given to all students regardless of age. NGOs have repeatedly told Government authorities that malnutrition is widely prevalent in the Wanni, especially among the displaced persons. Even permanent residents have been affected, because the war has brought unemployment, or taken away family breadwinners.
