World Bank funded Varothayanagar water supply scheme commissioned[TamilNet, Thursday, 30 June 2005, 02:35 GMT]Mr.Tyronne Fernando, North East Governor Wednesday evening declared open the Varothayanagar water supply scheme constructed at a cost of 118 million rupees by the World Bank (WB) funded North East Emergency Reconstruction Programme (NEERP). The National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) implemented the project. Varothayanagar water tank has the capacity of one million litres and is fed from the Kantalai tank located about 39 km southwest of Trincomalee on Trincomalee-Kandy highway. The water distribution of the Varothayanagar water supply scheme covers Varothayanagar, Mihindupura, Allesgarden, Selvanayakapuram, Jinna nagar and Abeyapura, all suburbs of the east port town. Beneficiaries under this project are estimated more than eighteen thousand and the scheme is also designed supply water to additional 27 thousand people in the future, NEERP sources said. North East Provincial Chief Secretary Mr.S.Rangarajah, along with Provincial Secretaries Mr.R.Thiyakalingam (Education), Mr.A.K.Kumaraswamy (Public Administration), Mr.S.Mahalingam, (Rehabilitation and Reconstruction and NEERP Project Co-ordinator). Mr.P.Ramanathan, Lands and Agriculture), Mr.Siriwardene (Health), participated in the event. Mr.G.K.Srimal, NWSDB Deputy General Manager, Mr.T.Lankaneson, NECORD Project Director and several officials attended the event. Mr.Tyronne Fernando along with parliamentarians Mr.Sampanthan and Mr.Thurairatnasingham inaugurated the water distribution by opening the main valve of the scheme. Thereafter Mr.Tyronne Fernando opened the water tap erected outside the water tower. Then he and Mr.Sampanthan planted tree saplings in the premises, sources said. This water supply scheme was launched to alleviate the sufferings of the inhabitants in these suburbs due to shortage of drinking water, NEERP sources said. Varothayanagar located about five km off the east port town, is one of the fast developing suburbs. Varothayanagar was named after late Mr.N.R.Rajavarothiayam who represented the Trincomalee parliamentary electorate since 1952 till his death in the year 1963 on Ilankai Thamilarasu Katchchi (ITAK) ticket, sources said.
