Police retaliatory fire kills one[TamilNet, Saturday, 23 May 1998, 23:59 GMT]Sri Lankan police fired at random as they recovered the body of a policeman who was shot dead by suspected Liberation Tigers earlier today, said sources in Trincomalee. Velupillai Thavarajah, 24 was killed instantly in front of his house when he was hit by police fire. The policemen had fired from a Ceylon Transport Board bus that had been comandeered to remove the dead policeman at Nilaveli, said sources. At an inquest today the Coronor, Mr. K. Selvarajah, stated that the cause of death was murder. The dead policeman in mufti had been shot by unidentified youths around 7a.m. this morning.
