Emergency Regulations passed[TamilNet, Wednesday, 05 August 1998, 23:59 GMT]The Sri Lankan Government has postponed the Provincial Council (PC) Elections scheduled to be held August 28 for an indefinite period. The Commissioner for Elections said that Elections could not be held as the entire country was in a state of emergency. An island-wide state of Emergency was declared by the president yesterday. Meanwhile the Sri Lankan Parliament today approved the Emergency regulations declared by the President with a majority of 44 votes. The Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF) and the People's Liberation Organisation of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE) voted against the proposal.
