STF, LTTE clash in Batticaloa, Tiger cadre killed

Sri Lanka Special Task Force (STF) troopers and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) cadres manning the Forward Defence Line (FDL) positions in Vellaveli, clashed Sunday morning around 5:15 a.m. Mortar shells were fired towards LTTE FDL and the surrounding villages as a group of STF troopers attempted to move inside the LTTE territory, said LTTE Batticaloa District Poliitcal Head Daya Mohan. A Liberation Tigers cadre was kiled and two STF troopers were wouned in the clash that lasted for more than 45 minutes. Vellaveli is located 25 km southeast of Batticaloa.

"The STF attempt to move inside our territory, beyond the no-go zone was defeated," Mr. Daya Mohan said.

Police sources identified the wounded STF troopers as M. Sanjeeva, 32, and Sumith Tharmarajapakse, 38.

The traffic through Paddiruppu bridge and Ambilanthurai ferry entry points were blocked by the Sri Lankan forces.

Meanwhile, civil sources said that the clash had prompted civilians to flee inwards the LTTE controlled area as STF troopers were firing shells towards Thumpankerni, Thikkodai, Ganthipuram near Vellaveli from Kaluwanchikudy STF camp.

Around 180 families moved into Thumpankerni Tamil school seeking refuge from the shell attack.

Tamil Rehabilitation Organisation (TRO) volunteers were assisting the displaced people at Thumpankerni school, according to Tamil National Alliance parliamentarian P. Ariyanenthiran.

Vellaveli was under Sri Lanka Army (SLA) occupation for a number of years before it was captured by LTTE in 1995.
