Critically ill Vaharai patients transferred to Batticaloa by sea[TamilNet, Saturday, 23 December 2006, 21:01 GMT]Request made by Vaharai hospital authorities Friday to Batticlaoa ICRC and Deputy Director of Batticaloa District Health Services to transfer patients in need of essential medicine to Batticaloa hospital resulting in no positive response, Vaharai hospital staff headed by Dr. Thurairasa Varatharasa, managed to send patients to Valaichenai hospital in two boats Friday, Vaharai hospital sources said. Dr. Thurairasa Varatharasa said that Vaharai has become a region which cannot be covered by the Geneva conventions which allow urgent humanitarian assistance to those affected in war torn regions. We had a new born infant weighing less than 800 grams needing urgent treatment in our hospital for the last two weeks but we had neither the medicine to treat the child nor nutrients essential to keep it fed, the doctor added. Patients in need of additional treatment to save their lives have to be transferred by sea at the risk of their lives and on our own efforts. Chronology: 15.01.07 Unfolding misery
