General shut down in East continues for second day[TamilNet, Wednesday, 10 January 2007, 02:01 GMT]The general shut down organized by the public in Batticaloa and Amparai on Monday condemning the Sri Lankan Government’s decision to de-merge North and East continued on Tuesday , bringing the normal activities in the two districts to a stand still, sources in Amparai said. Banks, schools, business establishments, markets and Government departments in Batticaloa, Valaichenai, Chenkalady, and Kaluvanchikudy continued to remain closed. The public transport continued at a slower pace. All Tamil and Muslim businesses in Kalmunai town in Amparai District were completely shut down, local residents said. Sri Lanka Army troopers were deployed along the streets throughout the two districts.
