Rights group appeals to stop expulsion of Tamils

[TamilNet, Saturday, 09 June 2007, 04:14 GMT]
Human Rights commission (HRC) Jaffna sent an urgent appeal Friday, to Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission (SLRC) head office in Colombo, soliciting action to stop Jaffna peninsula Tamils being expelled from Colombo by the police, sources close to Jaffna HRC said. The peninsula residents who are in Colombo had secured Sri Lanka Army (SLA) permission to travel out, clearing many hurdles to attend urgent and important matters in Colombo, HRC said.

Obtaining tickets in the ships and planes to Colombo is a difficult process besides getting the SLA authorities to grant permission to leave the peninsula.

Residents of Jafna peninsula braved these hardships only when they had urgent travel need due to health, professional examinations and other such essential matters.
