Transformer explodes, causing island-wide power failure

The entire island of Sri Lanka plunged into darkness Monday morning around 5.55 a.m. for about two hours when a transformer of the Ceylon Electricity Board had exploded at Katunayake, a high security zone in the western province.

Transformer exploded causing power failure in country.

Power was restored through out the country in stages, CEB sources said.

CEB has started an investigation to find out the cause for the explosion.
