JHU walks out of APRC

[TamilNet, Wednesday, 13 August 2008, 02:02 GMT]
Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU), Sri Lanka's all monks' political party which has nine members in parliament, informed Sri Lanka's President Mahinda Rajapakse that it would not participate in the deliberations of the All Party Representatives Council (APRC) in future as it has lost confidence on the body in finding a consensus to solve the ethnic conflict on the basis of Mahinda Chinthanaya.

JHU has requested Rajapakse to summon the All Party Conference (APC) again instead of continuing with the APRC.

"The President initially convened the APC according to an undertaking given to people on the basis of Mahinda Chinthanaya. Thereafter APRC was appointed comprising representatives of political parties elected to the parliament.

"The task entrusted with the APRC was to find a solution to the NorthEast conflict arriving at a consensus after thrashing all difference of opinion. APRC has been continuing for the last two years without a consensus being arrived at. Hence the JHU decided to walk out from the APRC deliberations as no useful purpose would be served.

"The time has come for the JHU to reveal its stand before the public. JHU leader Venerable Ellawella Meththananda Thera has written to President Mahinda Rajapakse to summon the APC instead of continuing with the APRC," states a press release issued by the JHU General Secretary Venerable Omalpe Sobitha Thera.
