Court Martial to decide Fonseka's attendance to parliament

[TamilNet, Saturday, 17 April 2010, 17:30 GMT]
The Democratic National Alliance (DNA) led by the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) Friday said that an attempt is being made by the Government of Sri Lanka to prevent General Sarath Fonseka from attending the parliament by getting a conviction against him at the Court Martial hearing fixed for April 19, three days ahead of the inaugural event of the new parliament which is scheduled to meet on April 22, media sources reported quoting JVP former parliamentarian Anurakumara Dissanayake.

In response to that allegation the Defence Ministry spokesman Lakshman Hulugalla Saturday told a Colombo media that the possibility of conviction cannot be ruled out but stressed that the decision is in the hands of the judges.

He added the allegation that the government has been attempting to speed up the process of the Court Martial proceedings to Fonseka out of parliament is baseless.

General Fonseka who contested the April 8 general election in the Colombo district and won a seat in parliament with highest preferential votes in the DNA list while in military custody since his arrest on 8 February.
