Train drivers strike causes frustration[TamilNet, Thursday, 05 August 1999, 16:42 GMT]The train drivers strike that started at the Colombo fort station at 4.00 p.m. today has spread to other parts of the island. The strike was a protest against the attack of a train driver and other railway workers on the Awissawela-Colombo train by a group of passengers earlier today. The driver was attacked because the train was moving too slowly. Due to the timing of the strike, office workers have been stranded in front of the Colombo Fort station. The road in front of the station is so crowed with office workers that the traffic cannot move. The agitated and angry crowd have vented their anger by chanting slogans and blocking the roads. The police are trying to control the crowd.
