Tamil POWs, political prisoners announce fast unto death

[TamilNet, Friday, 06 November 2015, 23:44 GMT]
Rejecting the offer by the SL State to release them on bail, Tamil prisoners of war and political prisoners on Friday announced that they are going to begin a fast-unto-death protest in the prisons starting from 08 November on Sunday. Giving a last chance to the president, prime minister, attorney general and justice minister of the SL State to conduct negotiations with Northern Provincial Council Chief Minister Justice C.V. Wigneswaran, the Tamil prisoners who are going to commence the hunger-strike said they are determined to wage the struggle. Upon their demise, the SL Prsident Maithiripala Sirisena should come in person to receive their dead bodies and hand them over to the medical faculty of the University of Jaffna and that their organs should be donated or used for medical research, the Tamil prisoners said. “We are determined like Thileepan”, a POW told TamilNet.

In 1987, the remains of former LTTE Political Head of Jaffna Lt. Col. Thileepan, who sacrificed himself in a fast-unto-death, were handed over to the medical faculty of Jaffna, according to his wish. Thileepan was waging a hunger-strike, refusing to even take water, against the political injustice being committed against the nation of Eezham Tamils by India in collaboration with Colombo.

On the demands of Tamil Political Prisoners and Prisoners of War, the SL Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe was telling a delegation, which met him on Thursday that Colombo was considering to release 32 persons on bail before 09 November and another group of 30 persons before 20 November. Except 48 cases, the remaining would be either released or sent to military ‘rehabilitation’ before their release, the SL PM was saying.

However, out of 20 Tamil prisoners who were taken to courts in Colombo recently, 18 prisoners had objected the offer of being transferred to the ‘rehabilitation’ of the genocidal Sinhala military and were remanded further till 18 November.

The Tamil prisoners of war and political prisoners have also asked the SL State to negotiate with NPC CM Justice Wigneswaran.

The Tamil prisoners told Tamil media that they had lost their trust on a section of the ITAK leaders in the TNA although these leaders also have taken a view supportive of their demand for release now.

In the meantime, NPC Chief Minister Justice CV Wigneswaran has condemned the deceptive move of releasing Tamil political prisoners on bail and has demanded the SL president and SL prime minister to release the Tamil political prisoners, providing a general amnesty. He has also reminded Colombo that it alone cannot dictate the terms of a reconciliation approach. Reconciliation is only possible if both the parties are prepared to jointly undertake it, the Chief Minister told Tamil press earlier this week.
