A police intelligence officer was shot and wounded when unidentified gunmen opened fire at Kalmunaikudi, south of Batticaloa around 5.30 p.m. Wednesday, police sources said.

Police Sergeant Lariff is attached to the Kalmunai Intelligence Unit. He was injured in his arm. The Tamilnet correspondent in Ampara said that wounded police officer is now warded in Kalmunai hospital.
