Indian public opinion should take care of Russia meddling with Eezham Tamils

[TamilNet, Thursday, 21 April 2011, 21:51 GMT]
Mahinda Rajapaksa is harping on Russia and China to escape international action on war crimes and to continue the well-planned genocide of Eezham Tamils unabated. Regrettably, Russia sees the current accelerated process of structural genocide and dismemberment of the nation of Eezham Tamils in the island as ‘reconciliation’ that should not be disturbed by war crimes investigation. On Monday Russia raised a number of ‘procedural’ objections on UN discussing the panel report. According to Inner City Press Thursday, Colombo’s UN representative Palitha Kohona insisted that there was “no mechanism” to bring the matter to the Security Council and that “We have Friends”. Whether Russia is acting on own or at the behest of somebody else, public opinion in India should take care of Russia, writes a Tamil political activist in Colombo.

Ideological supporters of the former Soviet Union in the island of Sri Lanka were a party to the 1972 constitution that degraded Tamils as second grade citizens and paved way for the beginnings of the armed conflict in the island.

After J R Jeyawardane coming to power in 1977, when Soviet Union was not an active supporter of Colombo, some Tamil militant groups of leftist orientation approached Soviet Union for support, especially after 1983. With the facilitation of the Communist Party of India some Soviet ministers met the militants, but their advice to the militants at that time was to do everything through India.

Soviet Union was not intervening directly into the affairs of South Asia and it was maintaining dignity and good respect among the peoples of South Asia and among many of the peoples struggling for freedom elsewhere.

The present Russia being ideologically far away from the former Soviet Union is well known. But, strategic partnership, defence dealings, economic interests and old friendships continue to some extent.

Eezham Tamils in their liberation struggle were never opposed to any power. Yet a war was waged against them by India. Eezham Tamils never had any animosity especially towards the USA. Yet the USA initiated world mobilisation to destroy their security balance, paving way for the genocide. Ironically, during the war, Russia and China not only blocked UN intervention, but at the end of the war, also denied international justice at the UN human rights council, joining India along with their bloc of countries.

Such is the frenzy of the power games of the establishments of our times that have no rules or values. Adding to the chaos, we have some so-called leftist, third world and non-aligned intellectuals and establishments, the anti-imperialism of which is of no help to people suffering in terrorist and genocidal states. The merit of the question of any suffering people is never considered on its own rights.

The thuggery of the establishments can never be stopped unless the power of the people is mobilised and demonstrated in intelligent ways.

But then we have Rajapakses who are determined to mobilise and demonstrate the strength of the genocidal sentiments of the people. Rajapaksa has vowed to show it, ironically on May 1, a day reserved for the show of strength of the working class of people.

A typical example of the dangerous level of genocide faced by Eezham Tamils could be seen in an interview given by a former TNA parliamentarian from Vanni, who is now in the captivity of Colombo. During the war he was living with people inside the war zone and with true feelings he was telling the outside world what was happening then. Anyone who reads his interview to "Asian Tribune" this week telling that “not a single innocent civilian was killed by the Sri Lankan Armed Forces in the hostility campaign against the LTTE,” could easily understand the power of the ongoing genocide in the island.

As long as there are establishments and some diplomats who are prepared not to care for being the laughing stock of humanity by calling genocide as reconciliation, Rajapakses will have their field day.

The former friends of Russia in India have a major role to play in setting diplomacy right. If not, the only place where a demonstration of the people’s strength could make a difference in altering the situation is Tamil Nadu.
