Grassroots stand united against militarisation of PTK

The representatives of grassroots organisations in Puthuk-kudiyiruppu (PTK) representing all sections of the people in the division unanimously resolved against militarisation and demanded the civil authorities and politicians for de-militarisation of PTK. A Tamil National Alliance parliamentarian received flak for his proposal to SL military for an alternative venue to relocate its camp currently situated at Ponnambalam hospital created during the times of the de-facto State of Tamil Eelam under the LTTE.

Muslims in Ampaa'rai: SL authorities have seized lands for Sinhalicisation

Tamil-speaking Muslim activists in Ampaa'rai complain that Sinhala officials have seized 2,541 acres of their lands in 7 different locations within the district in recent years. The SL departments of Archaeology, Wildlife Conservation and Forest Department have occupied the agricultural lands under various pretexts for Sinhalicisation and colonisation, they said. A Muslim organisation has sent a detailed appeal to SL President and urged to release these lands back to the owners.

SL authorities refuse to channel irrigation water to Vella-ve'li from Inginiyagala Reservoir

More than 1,000 Eezahm Tamil families are affected as their rice fields are not receiving irrigation water supply in Vellaa-ve'li, located 24 km southeast of Batticaloa city. The SL authorities in predominantly Sinhala Inginiyagala irrigation scheme in the nearby Ampaa'rai district are refusing to channel water to the smaller reservoirs in Vellaa-ve'li. It has been the practice in the past, especially when the local reservoirs go empty for irrigation water during the dry season, to channel water from the largest Inginiyagala reservoir to the smaller reservoirs in Vellaa-ve'li.

Alarm over high suicide rates in Vavuniyaa

The Director of Vavuniyaa General Hospital Dr K. Akilendran has urged public awareness and education against increasing depression and suicidal thoughts in the society citing the alarming rate of suicides registered by Vavuniyaa hospital in 2017 and the first two months of 2018. The suicide tendency is higher among war-affected families that are affected by trauma over several years. Most of the victims are between 12 and 45 years, he said. The hospital has registered 393 attempted suicides throughout 2017. There have been 35 cases for treatment within the first two months in 2018 at Vavuniyaa hospital.

Unknown persons attempt to trigger communal clash in East

As a wave of the anti-Muslim pogrom was spreading from Kandy to other areas in the Central Province, a group of unknown persons on Wednesday attacked a Tamil man in a predominantly Muslim area in Akkaraip-pattu in the district of Ampaa'rai in the Eastern Province. On Thursday, a small bomb was diffused at a border area between Tamil and Muslim villages near Aaraip-pattai (Aaraiyampathi) in Batticaloa district.

NPC to seek direct response from SLA commander on transfer of cashew farms

Wigneswaran has initiated a move demanding a direct response from the commander of the SL military, Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake, on its repeated requests to hand over the cashew farms that are under the occupation of SL military stationed in Ki'linochchi and Mannaar districts to a civil authority.

Colombo discriminates Tamil-speaking graduates in teaching appointments in East

Tamils, Muslims in Mannaar jointly protest against Syrian onslaught

Eezham Tamils have not forgotten how more than 40 countries, including the USA, China and Russia were directly or indirectly abetting the genocidal onslaught of Eezham Tamils tilting the diplomatic and military power of the Tamils in the conflict. Don't play your global and politics on innocent people's lives. We see this repeating again and again and stand in solidarity with the affected people of humanity,” said Tamil activist V.S. Sivakaran, who mobilised Tamil-speaking people in Mannaar for a protest on Saturday.

‘Sinhala Gammana’ colony gets expanded in Ko'ndaichchi, Mannaar

The Forest Department of genocidal Sri Lanka is silently expanding the so-called ‘Sinhala Gammana’ colony in the traditional Tamil village of Ko'ndaichchi in the Musali division of Mannaar district. The majority of the colonisers are Sinhala Army, Navy and Civil Defence Force paramilitary personnel in addition to the Sinhala workers of SL State-owned cashew corporation. Construction workers from South who were deployed by the occupying SL military and Rajapaksa regime for the post-war infrastructure and militarisation of North were settled there by the occupying Sinhala military.

SL Navy dumps garbage polluting Champoor lands

The occupying SL Navy, which has seized thousands of acres of lands for its naval training base called SLNS Vidura, is dumping garbage into the agricultural areas of resettled people outside the military zone, causing environmental and health hazards. At the same time, lousy toilet drainage from SLNS Vidura base is also polluting the drinking water of resettled people, health workers among the resettled Tamils in Champoor told TamilNet.
