Youth killed, 2 SLA troopers injured in Jaffna

An unidentified youth was shot dead, two Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers were injured, and an elderly civilian was injured by SLA fire in three separate incidents in Jaffna Wednesday, civil society sources in Jaffna said.

The body of a youth, estimated to be 25 years old, with gunshot wounds was found Wednesday morning at Paalpannaiyadi, Thirunelvely within Jaffna Municipal limits. The youth was riding a bicycle when he was shot dead, sources said.

The body was taken to Jaffna Teaching hospital and has not been identified until Wednesday night, hospital sources said.

Meanwhile, two SLA troopers were seriously injured when unidentified youths riding a motorbike hurled a hand grenade towards the soldiers on foot patrol in Neervely around 1:30 pm Wednesday.

The injured soldiers were rushed to Palaly Military hospital for treatment.

A civilian, Arumugam Joseph, 60, from Neervely, was seriously injured when soldiers fired discriminately following the attack, He was admitted to Jaffna Teaching hospital for treatment, civil sources said.

Meanwhile, a claymore aimed at a military convey in Chavakachcheri in Thenmarachchi region, exploded Wednesday 12:00 noon missing the intended target, sources said. Following the attack, SLA conducted a cordon and search operation in the area. No one was arrested in the search, local residents said.
