Shell injures police, civilian in Vavunathivu

A civilian and a police Seargent were seriously injured when a
mortar shell exploded near the police sentry point on the
Vavunathivu Sri Lanka Army (SLA) Forward Defence Line (FDL) Monday around 6:30 a.m, said residents in Vavunathivu.
The injured civilian was identified as Sinnathamby Sinnavan, 55, a tractor driver. The police Sergent was identified as K. Wickremesinghe, 36. Both were admitted to Batticaloa Teaching hospital for treatment, said hospital sources. Vavunathivu region has been subjected to sporadic shell attacks during the last two months. The SLA and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) blame each other for the shelling, civil sources said. Vavunathivu is located 5 km south west of Batticaloa town.
