CID conducts spurious searches in paramilitary operatives’ houses in Vaazhaichcheani

[TamilNet, Saturday, 12 June 2010, 09:24 GMT]
Sri Lanka Criminal Investigation Department (CID) searched Tuesday the house of Nagalingam Thiraviyam alias Jeyam, a member of the Eastern Provincial Council and an operative of Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal (TMVP) who had been evicted from Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in 2004 by the then Commander Karuna and present Deputy Minister of Rehabilitation, Vinayagamoorthy Muaralitharan. Similar searches were also made in his other houses in Vaakarai police division and his relatives’ houses in Challiththeevu and Panichchangkea’ni areas, sources in Batticaloa said. The CID, however, has not confiscated any stolen goods or documents related to various criminal activities of Jeyam who possesses wealth and properties exceeding his income, the sources added.

Jeyam is alleged to be involved in robbery and murders and it is further said that he has the support of the Officer-in-charge of Vaazhaichcheanai police station as the complaints made by people against Jeyam have not been investigated into.

TMVP men from Vaakarai to Chengkaladi areas in Batticaloa district including Jeyam from Vaakarai, Ajith from Ka’ruvaakkea’ni, Jeyanthan from Ka’n’nangkiraamam are involved in robberies and murders along with the OIC of Vaazhaichcheanai, according to allegations made by Vaazhaichcheanai residents.

Due to internal conflicts among the above TMVP men in sharing the money accrued through selling stolen jewelry they informed the police on each other and around fifteen persons who were led by Jeyam had been arrested and held in remand prison.

Meanwhile, the present chief minister of Eastern Province Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan alias Pillayan had in 2005 abducted youths in Eastern Province in white vans and trained them as paramilitary men with the help of SLA and Sri Lanka police. He further used these men in various killings, robbery and sexual abuse in Batticaloa district.

After becoming the CM in 2008, he had received more than 40,000 rupees each from more than 75 persons promising them jobs as minor employees in the hospitals in Kalkudaa electorate, according to allegations made by those who paid the money to his associate Kanthavanam Navarathinalingam alias Navam, of Peaththaazhai, a member of Vaazhaichcheanai Piratheasa Sabai.

Meanwhile, Jeyanthan of Ka’n’nangkiraamam is alleged to be intimidating people in the nights with a revolver and is said to own a two story building though he has no job or source of income.

Unidentified armed men had robbed 3 June two houses in Vempu area in Kumpurumoolai of cash and jewelry worth 25,000 rupees, according to complaints made by the persons robbed to Vaazhaichcheanai police.
