Parameswaran Ugendran, a member of Tamil Eelam Liberation Organization (TELO), who was severely beaten by fellow members on October 26th Deepavali day, died at the Colombo National Hospital at 4 pm today due to injuries suffered in the attack, hospital sources said.
Four members of TELO, Seenithambi Ranjan (Varathan) who contested in the last general election, Seenithambi Gokularaj (Kannan), Seenithambi Uthayaraj (Nirmalan) and Savirimuttu Mathivathanan, after mercilessly beating Ugendran for refusing to buy cigerettes, left him for dead, partially burying him. Ugendran was rescued shortly and was admitted to the Batticaloa General Hospital in critical condition. He was later sent to Colombo National Hospital where he remained unconscious during the last 45 days. Inspite of repeated requests by the Batticaloa General Hospital administrators and relatives of Ugendran, the Katankudi Police have not yet taken any action on the TELO cadres, sources said. Although the TELO leadership said that these four cadres have been dismissed from the organization, sources say that they continue to carry arms and are working with the Aarayampathi Special Task Forces (STF) division of Sri Lanka security forces. Parents and relatives of Ugendran have complained to the Police of receiving death threats.
