Nimalarajan Memorial Lecture to be held at LSE

A lecture to commemorate Mr. Mylvaganam Nimalarajan, a Tamil journalist based in Jaffna who was murdered allegedly by gunmen of the Eelam People's Democratic Party (EPDP) in 2000, will be held at the London School of Economics in London, UK, on October 30, sources said.

The Nimalarajan foundation and the Reporters Sans Frontiers are co-sponsoring the event.

Dr. Saman Kelegama, the Executive director of the Institute of Policy Studies in Sri Lanka will deliver the memorial lecture and Mr. Priyath Liyanage, Editor the Sinhala Section of the BBC world Service, will  chair the event, sources said.

The British Broadcating Corporation (BBC) said that Mr. Nimalarajan was its only correspondent in the war-torn area of Northeast to report on the war there.  He reported to many other news organizations as well. 

Mr. Nimalarajan was gunned down on October 19, 2000, at his home located in the Sri Lanka Armyâs High Security Zone in Jaffna.

Though three years have passed by since his murder, the assassins are yet to be captured. The murder case is stuck in the courts in Sri Lanka without any progress as there appears to be no firm will on the part of the Sri Lankan government and its security establishment to apprehend and prosecute the alleged assassins from the EPDP, human rights activists say.
