Sri Lankan police get deadline

Sri Lankan policemen, already stretched in their combat support role with the Sri Lankan armed forces, were handed another curious burden yesterday by Colombo High Court Judge K. N. Ramachandran, when he asked them, with due judicial gravity, to produce in Court by May 18, eight persons, including LTTE leader Veluppillai Prabhakaran, Pottu Amman and Charles Master and five others said legal sources.

The police, for their part, solemnly told the Court that they were unable to serve the warrant because the accused were in areas controlled by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) to which the police 'had no access'.

The Court then resorted to a method whereby Mr. Prabhakaran and other members of the Tiger hierarchy could learn that a warrant had been issued on them, and hopefully surrender to Court!

The court instructed the police to publish the warrants in all three languages in all the Sri Lankan newspapers.
