HRC to meet SLA commander on Jaffna road 'accidents'

The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka is to take up the matter of increased involvement of army vehicles in road accidents in Jaffna district in recent times with the Commander of the Sri Lanka Army Lionel Balagalle following a report from its regional office in Jaffna, HRC sources said.

The Jaffna regional office of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka had sent a full report on the increased involvement of army vehicles in road accidents in Jaffna district, which followed protest and agitation by the civilian population, sources said.

The HRC report had been prepared based on statements made by affected parties in road accidents that had taken place in recent times, sources said.

Meantime military police of the SLA has started checking army vehicles, which ply on Jaffna roads whether the army drivers possess necessary required documents and vehicles are roadworthy, sources said.

Meanwhile not a single three wheeler was found on the road Tuesday as a protest to the attack on journalists and three wheelers by the SLA at Mampalam junction in Jaffna town last Saturday followed an appeal made by the Jaffna Three wheelers' Association, sources said.
