Firing near Eravur Police sentry
[TamilNet, Saturday, 07 March 1998, 23:59 GMT]
The Lankadeepa, the largest selling Sinhala daily in Sri Lanka, carried a lead story today which claimed that the Liberation Tigers had attacked the Eravur Police station yesterday in a bid to rescue the two persons arrested and held there in connection with the bomb blast in near downtown Colombo on Thursday, March 5.
The Lankadeepa story by Srinath Prassanna and Sujith Hewajulige said that the LTTE had attacked the Police station for three hours but gave no details. Police sources in Eravur, however, denied the story saying that the one or two LTTE infiltrators operating as loners in Eravur had fired a few rounds in Division 5 of Eravur in the direction of a Police sentry at a place called Vammiady yesterday in the morning around 9.30 am. The local correspondent of a Tamil daily said the attack story was hoax, concocted out of the firing at Vammiady. The suspects, the wife of the person said to be the owner of the bomb laden bus and its counductor, were brought to Colombo yesterday.
