Christians in Batticaloa are making plans to celebrate Christmas grandly this year, and crowds of public coming into the town from all directions could be seen shopping in the past few days, sources said.
There was traffic congestion and traffic police was seen directing the heavy traffic on Wednesday, sources said. As there are no parking spots, people park their vehicles on the roadsides, inconveniencing pedestrians. As a result of the peace environment, Sinhala and Muslim businessmen from the South are also selling their merchandise in Batticaloa, sources said. Local businessmen said, however, that the sales did not meet their expectations as the purchasing power of the people had been reduced during the long war.
