A young officer attached to the Batticaloa unit of the Sri Lankan National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) committed suicide this morning around 7.15 a.m. frustrated allegedly over the denial of a transfer. The young NIB officer was identified as Undugoda, 24.
Police sources in Batticaloa said that the officer had been transferred to Batticaloa from the NIB unit in Vavuniya ten days ago. He had requested that he be transferred out of his station in Batticaloa. This was denied him said the Police sources. They said that his suicide appears connected to his frustration over the refusal of the transfer. There have been several incidents of suicide among servicemen on active duty recently. In January , an officer from the Military Intelligence camp in Batticaloa, committed suicide by shooting himself. Several cases of soldiers shooting themselves in the foot so that they are relieved of military duties in the forward operational areas have also been reported earlier.
