Douglas goes to Jaffna
[TamilNet, Saturday, 11 October 1997, 23:59 GMT]
EPDP leader Douglas Devananda flew to Jaffna today to supervise and reorganize his group in the peninsula and in Kayts.
The move is connected to problems which arose in the organization after his most trusted lieutenant called Mathan fell out with him in May this year. Mathan (Ramamoorthy) is an MP for Jaffna. Douglas had completely entrusted the administration of Kayts and later of Jaffna to Mathan. Mathan's departure and his current activities against the EPDP leader have become a major headache for Douglas. Mathan continues enjoy some influence among the EPDP cadre in Jaffna. Today's trip by Douglas is seen in Tamil political circles as an attempt by him to neutralize Mathan's influence in the Jaffna EPDP and to brief his active cadre on preparations for the local government elections in January.
