Army mounts fresh offensive

The Sri Lankan army restarted Operation Jayasikurui towards Mankulam at the first light of dawn today said government military sources in Vavuniya. According to initial reports from the front, four soldiers were wounded in the P-1, P-2 categories by fire from the positions of the Liberation Tigers in an around Mankulam they said.
Operation Jayasikurui was launched on May 13, 1997. The latest phase of the ten month long operation is expected to bring the strategic Mankulam junction under the SLA's control. However, army sources in Vavuniya said that the first objective is capture the outskirts of Mankulam and consolidate positions there. Resistance is expected to be heavy they said.
