Resettled village honors its good student

Parents and students of Kappalthurai, a village with Tamil resettlers, honored Jenitta Vipulanandan, a student of Saraswathie Vidyalayam, for passing the island wide Year- 5 Scholarship examinations. This was the first in the school's twenty-five year history, school teachers said.

Kappalthurai is located about 11 km from east port town along Trincomalee-Colombo trunk road. Jenitta was taken in a procession by parents and students
of the village along the main road to Kappalthurai Saraswathie Vidyalayam accompanied by the Deputy Zonal Director of Education Mr.T.M.Jusuf Jhan, Founder President of the Trincomalee District Fund for Affected Students
Mr. Kanagasabai Thevakadachcham, Principal Mr.K.Thayanandaguru and Primary Education Advisor Mr.S.Kaneshalingam. Mr.Thevakadchcham presented Jenitta with a new bicycle on behalf of the Fund for Trincomalee District Affected Students. She was also presented with gifts by Principal and well wishers. The class teacher for Year 5, Ms.Malathi Ponnambalam was also commended for the success of her student.

Jenitta with guests and staff of the schoolThe entire village was displaced in 1990 when Sri Lanka's security forces launched a military operation in the area. They were given shelter in the Clappenburg refugee camp. Resettlement started in 1996. Students who have passed the Year 5 Scholarship examination are eligible to get admission in leading schools in the island, according to education sources.
