General elections would create more confusion - TNA

Commenting on the dissolution of parliament and the scheduled general elections in April, the parliamentary leader of the Tamil National Alliance, Mr. R. Sampanthan, said Sunday that the general elections would lead to more confusion in the country as the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), which clamored for the elections "to salvage the country from the current political uncertainty," have no clear-cut policies to solve the Tamil national question.

Mr. Sampanthan, who represents the Trincomalee district in parliament, said, " President Chandrika Kumaratunge and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe cannot solve the Tamil national question by leading the country in two different directions.

"Even the two leaders joined under a common programme cannot find a political solution to our problems because all Sinhala political parties have been planning to capture power using the current conflict."

"I would dare to state that not a single Sinhalese political leader in the country could find a just and fair political solution satisfying the legitimate aspirations of the Tamil people," said the TNA leader.

"The Sinhala chauvinist forces say that at the forthcoming general election about 25 LTTE cadres would come to parliament under the Tamil National Alliance, " said Mr. Sampanthan. "There is no hide-and-seek in this regard. The bright future of Tamils solely depends on the firm unity of the LTTE and the moderate Tamil leadership working jointly for the political liberation of Tamils in the Northeast province."
