The German Development Bank has pledged 165 million rupees (2.7 million US $) for the reconstruction of more than 81,000 houses in the Jaffna District and the Naavatkuli warehouses which have been destroyed by the war, said sources in Jaffna.
The German Technical Institute (GTI) has gathered statistics which reveal that 81,000 houses in the Jaffna District have either been fully or partially damaged. The reconstruction process will utilise building materials provided by GTI and manpower from the owners of the damaged buildings. This scheme will be initially implemented in the Waligamam South, Nallur and Waligamam West Divisions in the Jaffna District. It has been proposed that educational and health facilities will also be provided to the area while the reconstruction process is on. Priority will be given to female headed households which have lost the regular breadwinner. The reconstruction work is expected to be completed before the end of next year. The GTI has obtained expertise from even technicians who have been involved in the reconstruction of war ravaged Bosnia, said sources.
