Protest against attack by Indian poachers

Fishermen of Vadamaradchchi division in Jaffna district Tuesday did not go fishing in protest to the attack by a group of Indian poachers on local
fishermen. Vadamaradchchi north fisheries federation sources said that it
is organizing a mass protest against the attack on local fishermen by
Indian poachers Wednesday..
Fisheries federation has already informed the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission
(SLMM) and government security establishment in Jaffna in Jaffna about the
proposed protest action against Indian poaching, sources said. Three fishermen of Viyaparimoolai in Vadamarachchi division in Jaffna
district Monday early morning went for fishing in the northern sea.
Suddenly Indian poachers in three crafts surrounded them and started to
attack them with swords and other dangerous weapons. Thereafter Indian
poachers had thrown one local fisherman Kanagaretnam Ratnam Sivanandam
after cutting him with dangerous weapons such as swords.
One of the injured local fishermen Mr. Selvarasa Selvamohan is seen warded in Jaffna teaching hospital The body of the
missing fisherman Kanagaretnam Ratnam Sivanandam (31) has not been
recovered till Tuesday evening, fisheries sources said. Two other local fishermen sustained injuries in the attack are now warded
in the Point Pedro hospital, fisheries sources said.
