SLRCS organizes women day celebrations in Trinco

International Women Day celebrations, organized by the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society (SLRCS) in collaboration with the UNHCR, was held in Nilaveli, 16 km off north of Trincomalee town. UNHCR Trincomalee official Mr. Clifford Speck was the chief guest.

Certificates and prizes were distributed to the winners of art competition held on the theme "Violence against Women." Assistant Director of Cultural Affairs in the provincial ministry of education Ms N.Sri Devi was the guest of honour. SLRCS National Secretary Mr.S.H.Nimalkumar and International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Trincomalee head delegate Mr. Askar Umarbeckov
participated. The President of the SLRCS Trincomalee district branch Dr. E.G.Gnanagunalan
said violence against the women is on the increase in the country and Women
should learn art of self-defense to overcome violence against them.

Women viewing art exhibition on " Violence against Women" held at women day celebration in NilaveliMrs. Sri Devi said civil societies should promote gender equality if violence against women is to be contained. Mr. Clifford Speck said it is discouraging to note that people who agitate against racial discrimination are reluctant to give priority to violence against women.
